Cloud Cuckoo Land v 1.1 Out Now

So what's new?

A few new characters like this guy: (BTW these youtube videos are unlisted and apparently are finicky when embedded elsewhere. If they don't play, just click on Watch on Youtube to view it from their website.)

A continuation of the story until the end of chapter 1.

Previously....

Our MC was being tormented by visions of Dr. Kent not just in his dreams but also when he fantasizes about other people. We last saw him frozen in fear as he looks at Dr. Kent at a walkway, unsure if Dr. Kent is really there or if its another vision. The new update continues
immediately after that and shows the rest of Chapter 1.  It ends with an important choice that would determine how you proceed with the next chapter.

A new character gallery

The gallery screen is now functional. See how it works below:

  • Unlock sprites as you meet characters in the story
  • Unlock alternative sprites when you meet different appearances for each character
  • Each sprite opens a gallery for that character where you can access the Image Gallery, Replay Gallery and other snippets of information about the character.

Notes:

It is important that you start a new game. There are loads of changes behind the scenes that would make old saves incompatible. For instance, a lot of new things are being tracked now that weren't in the previous version. This means it will have no information on those and will not work properly. The new gallery screen is a big example. It tracks met characters and scenes shown.

I'm planning better in advance now to minimize the need to start a new game in the future but for now, it is required that you start fresh.

Noted issues with the update:

  • If you fast forward through a replay via the replay gallery, it will cause an error at the end of the replay before going back to the menus. This happens when you rapidly click to rush the scene but doesn't happen when you press "Skip" or hold Ctrl. I've figured out the cause but haven't found a solution to this yet at this time.
  • Replaying a scene(via the replay gallery) where the MC's name is mentioned in the scene will use the default names (Evan, Devin and David respectively) instead of any custom name you input at the begining. I haven't found a solution to this. I'm actually thinking of removing the custom names altogether and make those default names official to make their characters more concrete but haven't implemented that in this update.
  • On Android: Normally, the tooltip at the bottom of the Replays section that tells the name of the replay you are hovering on should disappear when your cursor is not hovering on anything. On android, since hovering is not detected, the tooltip only appears when you click on a replay but stays there even when you change to a different character's gallery.
  • A background laughter audio from one of the replayable scenes via replay gallery sometimes persist when exiting the replay - causing you to hear some laughter while in the main menu. I've yet to find out what is causing this.

For me, this work is one of the wonderful works that allows you to immerse yourself in the characters more than any other work. However, it is very disappointing that it has not been updated since ver1.1. Are you planning an update?

Strange thing...I downloaded the update on the itch.io desktop app, opened the game, started a brand new game, and yet it still ended at the same place it did before.  When he spotted the doc in that hallway and panicked. I've confirmed I have the 1.1 version downloaded, but the "About" section of the game shows 1.0.  No idea what's going on there.  Going to try downloading the zip file and trying that way.

The older version was still on itch but I did set it hidden and unable to be downloaded. Don't know why it downloaded that. I deleted the old version now. Should only be 1.1 in there.

When I had this with a different game, the problem was that the update created a new map instead of replacing the old one. Go to the place where you downloaded its files and check if that is the case. If it is, make sure to transfer any important files you created after installation (like screenshots and saves, although in this update that has become redundant) to the new map. Delete the old one or put it in a different map Itch won't check as a backup, and your game should work fine again. Tell me how it goes.
